Rehab lead generation

Rehab lead generation you own, not rent.

Buying leads from call centers and directories can fill a gap, but you pay every month and the person was often shopped to several programs first. We help you build steady inquiries through channels that belong to you.

The short answer

What ethical rehab lead generation looks like.

Ethical rehab lead generation means bringing in calls, chats and insurance verifications through your own website, search rankings, map listings and AI visibility, then routing every inquiry directly to your admissions team. It avoids buying, selling or redirecting patient leads, which is restricted or illegal in many states, and it gives you clear data on where each admission came from.

Lower cost over time

Rankings and a strong website keep producing calls after the work is done. Purchased leads stop the day you stop paying.

Better first conversations

People who found you directly and read about your program call with fewer doubts than someone transferred from a hotline.

Clean, legal growth

Patient brokering laws are getting stricter. Owned channels keep you well clear of them and protect your reputation.

The ethical lead generation guide

How to grow admissions without renting your leads.

Key takeaways

  • Purchased leads stop the day you stop paying. Owned channels keep producing after the work is done.
  • Federal law (EKRA) and several state laws make paying for patient referrals a serious legal risk.
  • Most programs have leaks before they have a traffic problem: missed calls, slow follow-up and confusing forms.
  • Call tracking and source tagging turn marketing from guesswork into a budget you can defend.
  • Search, maps, AI answers and referral relationships can all feed inquiries straight to your own team.

Where most treatment centers get their inquiries today

Ask an admissions director where calls come from and the answer is usually a mix: some from Google, some from the map listing, some from referral partners, some from alumni, and a chunk from paid lead sources such as call centers, directories and pay-per-call networks. Paid leads feel efficient because they arrive quickly. Over time, though, they tend to become the most expensive and least controllable part of the mix.

Why rented leads are a risk, not just a cost

The addiction treatment industry has a long history of patient brokering: paying people or companies to steer patients to a particular program. It led to real harm, and lawmakers responded. The federal Eliminating Kickbacks in Recovery Act (EKRA), passed in 2018, makes it a crime to knowingly pay or receive anything of value for referring patients to recovery homes, clinical treatment facilities or laboratories, with penalties of up to $200,000 and ten years in prison per violation, and it applies to privately insured patients too. California (SB 1228, effective 2019) and Florida (the Patient Brokering Act) have their own laws, and Florida’s penalties climb to a first-degree felony when 20 or more patients are involved.

Not every paid lead arrangement is illegal, and we are not lawyers, so any arrangement you have should be reviewed by your counsel. But the safest growth strategy is simple: generate inquiries through channels you own, and route every one of them straight to your team.

This is not legal advicePatient brokering rules vary by state and by the type of arrangement. Talk with a healthcare attorney about any agreement that involves paying for referrals, calls or leads.

Fix the leaks before buying more traffic

Before adding new channels, we look at what happens to the inquiries you already get. It is common to find calls going to voicemail after hours, verification forms that ask for too much, slow callbacks, and pages where the phone number is hard to find on mobile. Fixing these leaks can increase admissions without any new traffic at all.

  • Answer rate for calls during and after business hours
  • Speed to callback for forms and missed calls
  • Form length and whether each field is truly needed
  • Mobile call buttons visible on every page
  • Clear next steps after someone reaches out
  • Insurance information easy to find before calling

The owned channels we build

Search rankings

Pages for each level of care, substance, insurance plan and location you serve, built to rank for the specific searches that turn into calls. See our rehab SEO approach.

Map listings

A complete, accurate Google Business Profile with steady reviews, often the single biggest source of local calls. See local SEO for rehab centers.

AI answers

Clear facts and structured data so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews can describe your program correctly and link to you. See AI search optimization.

Referral and alumni relationships

Clear referral pages and simple processes make it easy for therapists, hospitals and alumni to send people directly to your team, with nothing of value changing hands.

A website built to convert

Short verification forms, visible phone numbers and honest answers on every page. See addiction treatment website design.

Attribution: knowing what actually works

Without tracking, marketing budgets get decided by gut feel. We set up call tracking with CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics, tag forms by source and connect everything to simple monthly reporting. You see which channel, page and search produced each inquiry, and which of those became admissions in your system.

We set tracking up with privacy in mind. Call recordings, if you use them, stay in your account, and we avoid sending health-related details to advertising platforms.

Replacing purchased leads gradually

Most programs cannot stop buying leads overnight, and we do not recommend trying. Instead, we build owned channels while you keep what works, then reduce paid lead spend as organic and local inquiries grow. The goal is a census that does not depend on someone else’s call center.

Months 2 to 4Local SEO and core program pages; tracking in place
Months 4 to 8Organic and map inquiries grow; begin trimming paid leads
Months 8 to 12Owned channels carry a larger share of admissions
A gradual shift from rented to owned inquiries.

What a healthy inquiry mix looks like

There is no perfect formula, but programs that rely on a single source are fragile. A healthy mix spreads inquiries across search, maps, referrals, alumni and, for certified programs, paid search, with no single vendor able to switch off your census.

Paid search (certified)Visibility you control

Speed to response

When someone fills out a verification form, they are often contacting several programs at once. The program that calls back first, warmly and with answers, usually gets the conversation. We help you set up instant notifications, after-hours coverage and simple follow-up steps so no inquiry waits until morning.

  • Instant alerts to the right staff for every form
  • After-hours plan for calls and forms
  • Callback target measured in minutes, not hours
  • Follow-up sequence for people who do not answer

Purchased leads aren’t always wrong, but they shouldn’t be your whole plan.

  • Cost every single month, often per call
  • Callers may have been offered to other programs
  • Little control over how your program is described
  • Risk under patient brokering laws

Owned inquiries

  • Keep producing after the work is done
  • Callers found and chose your program
  • Your website tells your story your way
  • Clear source data for every inquiry

Everyone works well together and makes sure the jobs are completed and clients are satisfied.

FAQ

Questions about rehab lead generation.

Don’t see yours? Call us at (949) 394-7041.

What is rehab lead generation?

It is any work that brings potential patients or their families to contact a treatment program. We focus on owned channels: your website, search, map listings and AI visibility.

Do you sell leads or run a call center?

No. We never buy, sell or route patient leads. Every inquiry goes directly to your team.

Is buying rehab leads illegal?

Paying for patient referrals is illegal in many states and under federal law in some situations. Rules vary, so check with your legal counsel. We avoid the issue entirely by only building owned channels.

How do you track where admissions come from?

We set up call tracking with CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics and tag forms by source, so each inquiry shows the search, page or listing that produced it.

How fast can owned channels replace purchased leads?

It varies by market. Website and conversion fixes help within weeks; SEO and local search build over several months.

Can you answer our calls or run an admissions call center?

No. Calls go directly to your team. We can review call handling and suggest improvements, but we do not sit between you and patients.

What counts as an owned channel?

Any source where the inquiry comes straight to you and you control the message: your website, search rankings, Google Business Profile, AI visibility, referral relationships and your own ad campaigns.

Is affiliate or pay-per-call marketing allowed?

Rules vary and some arrangements may violate EKRA or state law. Talk with a healthcare attorney before entering any arrangement that pays for referrals or calls.
